AI Overviews. AI Mode. GEO. AEO. LLM SEO.
It’s a lot. And if you’re running a home service company, you may be wondering whether everything you’ve been told about SEO suddenly doesn’t matter anymore.
It does.
Search is absolutely changing. But one of the most important takeaways from Google’s recent #ReThinkROI event was actually pretty simple: The fundamentals still matter.
AI-powered search is built on top of Google’s existing crawling, indexing and ranking systems. Google still needs to understand your website, your business and why you’re relevant. What’s changing is how much information can be brought together to answer someone’s question.
That doesn’t mean SEO is dead. It means the bar is getting higher.
Do you really need another acronym?
There’s already a whole new vocabulary around AI search. GEO. AEO. LLM optimization.
Some of these concepts will absolutely matter as search continues to evolve. But home service companies shouldn’t feel like they need to throw out their entire digital strategy every time a new acronym starts trending on LinkedIn.
One of the points Google made at #ReThinkROI was essentially that good SEO is good GEO. AI Overviews and AI Mode still rely on the foundational systems Google has used to crawl, understand and rank the web.
What is changing is the range of information that can contribute to an answer. Your website might be part of it. Your Google reviews might be part of it. A YouTube video could be part of it. Photos, third-party websites and other online sources can all help create a more complete picture of your business.
So instead of asking, “What’s our GEO strategy?” there’s a more useful question: Does the internet give Google enough good information to understand who we are, what we do and why someone should trust us?
AI can create a lot of content. That’s not necessarily a good thing.
We’ve all seen what happened once generative AI made it possible to create a blog post in seconds. The internet got a whole lot more content. It didn’t necessarily get a whole lot more useful.
If every HVAC company can generate another generic article called “10 Signs You Need a New Furnace,” simply publishing article number 10,001 isn’t much of a strategy.
Google emphasized the value of fresh, authentic and firsthand experiences. Home service companies have an advantage here because you’re generating those experiences every single day.
Your technicians solve real problems. You work in real homes. You answer real customer questions. You know the quirks of the homes, weather, equipment and infrastructure in your local market.
That’s expertise a generic AI-generated article can’t manufacture. Use it.
Show the work
This doesn’t have to be complicated. A technician can record a quick video explaining why a pipe froze. Your team can photograph an unusual furnace problem and explain what caused it. Show the before-and-after of an electrical panel replacement. Have a technician answer a question customers ask all the time. Share a recent project and explain what your team found when they arrived.
That kind of content does two things at once. It helps the homeowner understand their problem, and it demonstrates that your company actually knows how to solve it.
That’s a lot more compelling than another paragraph saying you’re the “leading provider of high-quality HVAC services.”
Your website still needs to do its job
None of this means the website becomes less important. In fact, it makes a strong website even more important.
Can someone quickly figure out what you do? Can they tell where you work? Is your business information current? Can they easily call or book? Does your website answer the questions homeowners actually have? And does it sound like your company?
If your website could belong to any contractor in any city, that’s a problem. Your site should reflect your services, locations, people, expertise and actual work.
That’s useful for homeowners. It’s also useful for search engines trying to understand your business.
Video is becoming part of search, too
This is one area where we think home service companies have a lot of opportunity. Google can pull YouTube and other visual information into search experiences.
That doesn’t mean you need a production crew following your technicians around. Pull out a phone. Ask a technician to explain what they’re seeing. Show an interesting repair. Answer a homeowner question. Walk through a before-and-after.
The goal isn’t to create a commercial every time. The goal is to provide real proof from real people who know what they’re talking about.
Paid search is changing along with organic search
There’s also a paid media side to this.
When someone searches “AC repair near me,” the intent is pretty straightforward. When someone asks a detailed question about why their second floor won’t cool down even though their AC has been running all day, there’s a lot more context involved.
As search becomes more conversational, advertising has to become more capable of interpreting those signals and responding to intent. That’s where AI-driven campaigns and automation become increasingly important.
The goal is to move beyond simply showing an ad because someone typed a particular keyword and get better at connecting the right business with the right homeowner at the right moment.
What should home service companies focus on?
You don’t need to chase every new AI search trend. You do need to make sure the fundamentals are strong.
Answer real homeowner questions. Keep your website accurate. Show your actual work. Feature your technicians and their expertise. Build authentic reviews. Use photos and video. Keep your business information consistent. Make it incredibly clear who you are, what you do and where you do it.
Or, to make it even simpler: Be useful. Be specific. Be real.
AI is changing how homeowners find and evaluate businesses. But that doesn’t mean everything we knew about good digital marketing suddenly stopped working. It means shortcuts and generic marketing are going to be a lot easier to see through.
For businesses with real expertise and a willingness to show it, that’s not bad news at all.
